Google Sales Leaders Vie for Top Post

The race is on for one of the most important non-product jobs in tech: chief of sales and business development at Google.

Nikesh Arora, who shocked much of Google’s 15,000-plus sales organization two weeks ago by announcing his departure from the position, leaves behind a critical job opening as the unit tackles new challenges like mobile advertising and fierce competition in emerging markets. While Google’s former sales head Omid Kordestani is holding the role temporarily, several internal candidates are emerging to succeed him, say a half-dozen current and former Google sales executives.

Mr. Kordestani’s management style differs greatly from Mr. Arora’s. Whereas Mr. Arora pushed subordinates hard and was willing to be disliked by some in Google’s product organization, Mr. Kordestani is less confrontational and is more of a unifier who got big egos to work side by side, according to several former colleagues of both men. Mr. Kordestani "doesn’t lead from the front; he leads from the back,” says one former colleague.
