For every cybersecurity problem there are lots of solutions; CB Insights tracks nearly 500 private companies in the space, which sucked in $1.74 billion in venture and private equity investments in 2013 alone. But taken altogether they create an ecosystem that’s just too darn complicated—and thus especially ripe for consolidation.
Target, whose CEO resigned this week, provides a striking example. The company had hired well-regarded FireEye and a handful of other vendors to monitor its computers. But amid an onslaught of alerts, the different systems didn’t provide the bigger view of what was happening and the massive breach was ignored.
