Robots Aim to Move Beyond Maids

There aren’t many autonomous robots for sale to consumers. That makes it a big potential market for roboticists like Andy Rubin of Google, who is exploring robots for manufacturing and has considered making robot "assistants" for the home, according to a person briefed on his current project.

The definition of robot remains murky and is constantly changing. But it often refers to a machine that can perform physical tasks without human intervention.

A company spokeswoman says it has leased roughly 400 of its robot "suits" to 160 medical facilities and nursing homes at a cost of about $1,700 per month.
