The Bandwidth Problem That Deserves More Attention

This past Sunday night I sat down with my wife and daughter to watch a movie on Amazon Prime. What could have been a fun experience turned into a chore, however, as the film stopped repeatedly to buffer, for some stretches, every few seconds.

This was the second time in a few weeks we’d had this experience, the last time being when we bought a movie on streaming service Vudu. And both episodes were a reminder that, while more over-the-top video streaming services from HBO, Sony, Dish and others are on the horizon, the industry isn’t ready for prime time—literally.

In October, Time Warner’s Jeff Bewkes, noting how the infrastructure could be strained by additional online viewing, hinted that both traditional media companies and newer operations like Netflix need to help maintain the broadband infrastructure. “If we are going to move more use to that system… it has to be supported economically in some fashion” to ensure the broadband infrastructure can continue delivering digital programming.

In other words, this is the broader industry’s problem—and every company should help solve it.

If all TV viewing were to shift to the Internet at once, “The Internet, absolutely, 100 percent would melt down.”
