Verizon Poised for Big Push in Internet Video Services

As the rise of video streaming vastly increases the amount of data carried across the Internet, major telecom companies are developing a range of back-end service offerings in the hopes of becoming one-stop shops for Internet media companies that need seamless delivery of their content.

Verizon is aggressively building its Verizon Digital Media Services unit, which it created following the acquisitions late last year of Edgecast, a so-called content delivery network, and Uplynk, which provides video transcoding services.

The idea is to provide a package of services for digital video providers who deliver TV programming over the Internet and encourage the growth of online video, which in turn benefits Verizon’s wireless and wireline consumer Internet services.
