Inside Huawei’s Plans to Challenge Apple in the U.S.

The U.S. may no longer be a safe refuge for Apple and Samsung from the relentless rise of Huawei. When Huawei launches its flagship phone with AT&T early next year, the Chinese tech giant is finally going after Apple's home turf.

It is the culmination of more than a year of work at Huawei, including confidential negotiations with AT&T, technical adjustments to the phone based on U.S. standards and undercover market research missions. But Huawei still faces major obstacles to attract U.S. consumers, who are largely unfamiliar with the brand.

“It’s a challenge...but we can do that,” Mr. Yu said. “If you look back, five or six years ago when I said Huawei would be in the top three in smartphones, people were laughing at me saying I was crazy.”
