Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell is leaving Facebook, according to a memo sent to employees that was seen by The Information.
Mr. Mitchell was the head of product management for virtual reality and the last co-founder of Oculus still working at Facebook since the virtual reality startup was acquired for $2 billion in 2014. “It was a difficult decision, but now feels like the right time for a change,” Mitchell wrote in his farewell message to employees.
A Facebook spokesperson confirmed his departure, which was later shared publicly in an abbreviated post by Mitchell on Reddit. While Mitchell didn’t have as high a profile as other co-founders from companies Facebook has acquired, his departure marks the end of an era. All the co-founders of Facebook’s three largest acquisitions—Instagram, Oculus, and WhatsApp—have left the company.
