Apps Emerge as Key Battleground in Mobile Search

As Apple, Google, Microsoft and others race to build powerful voice-driven search capabilities for mobile devices, they’re zeroing in on a surprisingly thorny problem: enabling people to access the content and capabilities of mobile apps in their searches.

This contest to be smart about apps—call it the app IQ test—is being waged as the companies work on wearable devices such as watches and glasses as well as in-car communications systems that all but require voice-driven search that extends beyond traditional Web sites.
