AOL’s Armstrong Plans a Busy 2016

You might think AOL chief Tim Armstrong would take a breath after what’s been a frenetic year. AOL became part of Verizon, struck a big ad deal with Microsoft and bought mobile ad firm Millennial Media. Yet Mr. Armstrong, who stayed on to continue running AOL as well as overseeing Verizon’s digital media services business, isn’t done.

In an interview with The Information, Mr. Armstrong said the items on his agenda for 2016 include:

  • Overseeing product improvements at Verizon’s new mobile video streaming service Go90, which is targeted at millennials
  • Signing deals with other wireless carriers either in the U.S. or overseas to give them access to Verizon’s media offerings including Go90
  • Coming up with more engaging and interactive advertising formats that are less irritating to consumers. AOL introduced more customizable display ad formats in recent years and now aims to make similar efforts in mobile and video.

The full range of Go90's content is available only to Verizon Wireless customers but some of the content is available to anyone in the U.S. An earlier version of this story said the service was only available to Verizon subscribers.

Mr. Armstrong says he told Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam “that I would stay and see this through and that’s what I’m going to do.”
