Square Enix, the Japanese gaming publisher behind the long-running and beloved Final Fantasy series, is the latest entertainment company to publicly embrace the concept of the metaverse. And it’s not unreasonable to think that Square Enix could emerge as a metaverse leader if it makes a serious effort.
Yosuke Matsuda, Square Enix’s president, spelled out the company’s interest in the metaverse—and, by extension, blockchain and NFTs for future Square Enix titles—in a New Year’s letter. That sparked backlash from gamers who doubt the viability and sustainability of those technologies. But it’s worth remembering that on top of its other strong gaming brands, Square Enix runs Final Fantasy 14, one of the most popular “massively multiplayer” games today. That’s more of a metaverse foothold than many other companies can claim.
