A longtime Apple hardware engineering leader who oversaw a key wireless component inside its devices has left the company, The Information has learned.
The executive, Rubén Caballero, was until recently in charge of working with suppliers to integrate the modems that connect iPhones wirelessly to the internet. That part of Apple’s business has seen upheaval recently, with Apple announcing earlier this month that it will resume purchasing modem chips from a longtime supplier, Qualcomm, while a newer supplier, Intel, said it would leave the smartphone modem business. Intel had reportedly struggled with technical setbacks for modems that worked with 5G networks, a new generation of wireless technology; Apple was expected to use the Intel chips in future iPhones until the recent shift to Qualcomm.
