Self-driving vehicles are such a radical shift for the transportation industry that it is critical to build new cars from the ground up to take advantage of the technology, the head of Zoox, a startup that is doing just that, said on Thursday.
Tim Kentley-Klay, the co-founder and CEO of Zoox, said in an on-stage interview at The Information’s autonomous vehicle summit in San Francisco that the company is placing an “unapologetic bet” on building its own custom hardware and software in-house for self-driving cars. Zoox plans to roll out its own autonomous vehicles in 2020 and use them to launch a ride-hailing service.
