The pandemic shut-downs proved to be great for Cameo’s business of selling personalized video messages from celebrities such as Snoop Dogg or “Tiger King” star Carole Baskin. After growing faster than it expected last year, the startup, which takes a 25% cut of these video sales, aims to book $200 million to $300 million in celebrity shoutouts this year.
Cameo CEO Steven Galanis said the company is targeting an increase in its sales of video messages by two to three times this year compared to last year, when sales totalled $100 million. That represented a 4.5 times increase in sales from 2019, a far faster rate than the 3x growth it had projected, he said.
“The big question mark, of course, not just for our business but every business in the creator economy is, now that the world is opening back up, are we seeing the big hyper-growth we saw last year,” Galanis said in an interview this week.
