The bloody wars in the global ride-hailing and food-delivery businesses, which have unnerved investors in the U.S. so much this year, will open on a new front in 2020.
Didi Chuxing is expanding its ride-hailing and food-delivery businesses in Latin America, ramping up the competitive threat for Uber in the region. Didi’s international expansion comes as the Chinese ride-hailing giant—which, like Uber, is backed by SoftBank—has launched new initiatives to restart growth in China after an 18-month slump. Didi hopes that the relaunch of its carpool business, highlighted by a big discount promotion earlier this month, will double the number of rides taken in 2020 in that service.
