In late 2019, Facebook made its first VR studio acquisition by snapping up the Prague-based team Beat Games, makers of the rhythm game Beat Saber. Of all the VR game makers Facebook has acquired, this likely was the best deal: in February, Facebook announced that Beat Saber has sold over 4 million copies across all platforms and also generated more than 40 million paid song downloads.
And yet, despite being one of a few undisputed hits of VR, Beat Saber receives new playable content—in the form of new songs for players to swing their VR sabers to—at a slow clip. This week, Beat Saber received its first release of new music for the game since late May, comprising eight songs from DJ and producer Skrillex.
