Netflix’s Next Hit: Cybersecurity

Forget “Stranger Things.” In the enterprise technology world, Netflix is becoming known for its cybersecurity software. The video-streaming service is one of a number of companies, including Aetna, Etsy and Yelp, that are developing their own security products in response to specific threats to their business.

It’s a sign that as the array of cyber threats increases, companies are increasingly feeling they need a more customized approach to cybersecurity than what is available from major security firms.

Among the drawbacks for companies developing their own security software is that any issues with the software have to be fixed internally, instead of by an outside firm, Kudelski’s Mr. Howard said. It can also be expensive to get the developer talent needed, especially as more companies start to do this. But Mr. Howard noted that some companies have been able to make money by licensing the software they develop for a royalty. He declined to name them.
