Qualcomm executives are preparing to lay off as many as several thousand employees, according to people inside and outside of the chip maker.
The cuts underscore the continued challenges of being in the high-end smartphone business. Prices are falling, and $50 Android smartphones are a reality in countries like India and China. Qualcomm, which supplies chips to the iPhone and Samsung Electronics phones, faces major competition from China-based rivals MediaTek and Spreadtrum Communications.
