Christmas 2021 has come and gone, and it’d be reasonable to guess that it was the single biggest day for consumer adoption of VR in history. In lieu of official stats, various Meta employees on Twitter were eager to trumpet the headset’s holiday success over the weekend, and a handful of independent developers shared anecdotes about peaking sales and an influx of new players.

Setting aside some of the other questions this raises, such as how competing headsets fared or how many more under-13s have booted up Quests in violation of Meta’s policies, now’s a good time to consider how long all these new VR converts will really be at VR’s cutting edge. This time next year, will they already feel pressure to upgrade? It could be a challenge for Meta to hold on to those users if so.
