Microsoft’s line of Surface tablets and desktop computers—once maligned as lame copycats—have lately drawn favorable comparisons to Apple’s iPad and iMacs. Meanwhile Microsoft next year is expected to announce new hardware in both virtual and augmented reality, a sign that the company is flexing its innovation muscles as it pushes into ambitious areas of consumer hardware.
