With social platforms shutting down or limiting features in Russia as the country’s invasion of Ukraine continues, Russian social media influencers are being cut off from earnings.
The Russian government has blocked access to Facebook, a move it blamed on the social network’s restrictions on state media. Last week, Google paused ad sales in Russia, Reuters reported, including on YouTube, which gives creators 55% of the revenue from ads running on their videos. On Sunday, TikTok suspended livestreaming and new content in Russia in light of the country’s new law that prohibits reporting honestly about the progress of the war—or what authorities call “fake news.”
