Veterans of rocket companies and other commercial space ventures have an old saying: The secret to making a small fortune in the space business is to start out with a large fortune.

Despite the elusive nature of profits in the industry, space entrepreneurs and investors are riding high on a major new milestone for the sector, Space Exploration Technologies’ successful launch last Saturday of two NASA astronauts aboard its Crew Dragon spacecraft and their delivery to the International Space Station. The event marked a major leap forward for human spaceflight handled by private businesses rather than governments.
