There’s no doubt which presidential candidate the vast bulk of the tech industry supports and why. But in the tense state senate race between two San Francisco city supervisors, Jane Kim and Scott Wiener, the tech industry is more divided.
Mr. Wiener has the support of big donors such as Ron Conway, who pumped $200,000 into an anti-Jane Kim group. That’s mostly because Mr. Wiener is aligned with the business-friendly, “moderate” wing of politicians in San Francisco City Hall who believe the growth of the tech industry has been mostly good. As Mr. Conway said in an interview, Mr. Wiener “has been a lot more even-handed in looking at the impact of housing and the sharing economy and balancing all these interests.” (Other preferred candidates include a slate of moderate candidates up for city supervisor posts—Marjan Philhour, Joshua Arce and Ahsha Safai.)
