Admit it. You’ve done it.
That social media post you put up. The Instagram post of you on vacation in Mykonos with your family. The LinkedIn entry stating how great your company is doing. The Facebook post donating to a cause you know little about. Social media has created a never-ending loop for many inside and outside the technology industry. We are constantly under pressure to share our accomplishments, even though our external image might be far different from how we truly feel about our lives.
The gap between what we feel compelled to share publicly and how we feel privately takes a toll on our mental well-being. The risk may be especially high for those of us in the technology industry, where an emphasis on productivity, coupled with a presumed comfort with social media—a tool that, after all, our industry invented—make it awkward to opt out of continuous public disclosures.
