The People With Power at Airbnb After Shakeup

In 2017, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky restructured the fast-growing travel company to more closely resemble Amazon, a company whose handling of diverse business lines he had long admired. Reflecting Airbnb’s expansion into new areas, he created four separate product divisions and brought in a top Amazon executive to lead home rentals, the company’s core business.

Three years later, the Amazon influence is fading. Two executives recruited from the retail giant, including the head of Airbnb’s homes unit, left last week in a management shakeup. A third had already departed. The travel company’s organizational structure now bears little resemblance to the 2017 plan that gave weight to new ventures. 

Instead, Chesky is focusing on sustaining home rentals as Airbnb scrambles to bring back revenue lost when the coronavirus pandemic brought global travel to a near standstill.
