SUN VALLEY, Idaho—Despite the intense heat, the air at this year’s media-and-tech gathering run by investment bank Allen & Co. had a familiar energy. Media and telecom executives are struggling to retain their grip on power while complaining about tech companies exerting their overwhelming influence.
Among the highlights: ad executives explained their concerns about Snap, which was last year’s biggest darling at Sun Valley. The National Football League previewed what the streaming partnership with Amazon might entail and why executives remain confident despite weak ratings. There was lots of chatter about Uber’s travails, while at least one executive ruled herself out of the running for the top job at the ride-hailing firm. Then there was the 500-pound gorilla in the room that almost nobody wanted to speak about. (Hint: he’s huge on Twitter.)
