If there’s one category where Amazon.com hasn’t been able to undercut Walmart and Target, it’s groceries. When it comes to staples like breakfast items and beverages, Amazon is significantly more expensive than those rivals for the same goods—at least for now.
On average, top-selling items from Walmart in those two categories were 74.7% costlier on Amazon.com, and items from Target cost 72.8% more on Amazon. That’s according to a data set compiled by Boomerang Commerce, a startup that helps retailers decide how to price their items in the fast-changing online world. (See accompanying chart.)
