Amazon Studios has poached YouTube executive Jon Wax to run the division that produces fantasy and science fiction shows, a role left vacant with the departure of Amazon’s Sharon Tal Yguado last May, say industry executives. Mr. Wax was most recently head of drama, scripted, and current programming at YouTube, but the streaming platform indicated last fall that it would be moving away from producing original scripted fare in favor of unscripted programming. The move reunites Mr. Wax with Amazon Studios boss Jen Salke—earlier in his career he spent more than a decade at Fox as a programming executive, at the same time as Ms. Salke was an executive on the TV side at 20th Century Fox studio.
In his new role at Amazon, Mr. Wax will oversee Amazon’s expensive investment into a “Lord of the Rings” television series, as well as other fantasy and science fiction projects, including a pilot of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower.” He also brings stability to Ms. Salke’s executive team at a time that it’s seen significant departures. In addition to Ms. Yguado, news broke recently that film marketing vet Bob Berney would be leaving the studio at the end of the week.
