China Shuts Down Thousands of Apps, Slams Tencent

China’s internet regulator has initiated a new crackdown on “harmful” information, closing hundreds of websites and thousands of apps over the past three weeks, The Wall Street Journal reported. The Cyberspace Administration of China also singled out a Tencent news app for spreading negative news, without citing examples, according to the Journal. The move comes after China stepped up efforts to regulate short videos. The latest action underscores how China’s biggest internet companies continue to be at the mercy of authorities, making their success often unpredictable due to the country’s strict regulatory regime.
