Javier Soltero, the Microsoft corporate vice president in charge of the Cortana digital assistant, is leaving at the end of the year, according to this report from ZDNet. His departure raises further questions about the already murky future of Cortana, an early entrant to the digital assistant market whose momentum has stalled amid competition from Amazon and Google.
Mr. Soltero was recently a rising star within Microsoft. He joined the company through its 2014 acquisition of mobile application startup Accompli, which made a popular app for accessing Microsoft email, and steadily rose through the ranks before being appointed to lead Cortana in March. His departure shows that Microsoft’s reorganization earlier this year, which elevated Azure cloud and AI products while de-emphasizing Windows, isn’t yet complete.
