Arista Networks Agrees to Pay Cisco $400M to Settle Patent Lawsuit

Arista Networks has agreed to pay a $400 million settlement to Cisco Systems to resolve most aspects of a four-year-old legal battle between the companies over patent infringement and other issues, according to this report from Reuters. Arista shares rose more than 5% in the wake of the announcement, but Cisco shareholders didn’t seem as focused on the news, as the company’s shares were up just over 1% in late trading.

The deal may come as a relief to Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins, as it settles a dispute that began under–and was reportedly heavily driven by–former Cisco Executive Chairman and CEO John Chambers. A full settlement of the Arista case, which could happen later this year, would give Mr. Robbins a clean slate as he continues to recast Cisco as a subscription software-focused company.
