Netflix is fresh off a strong earnings quarter where it showed big subscriber growth internationally. Now it wants to make more content for that audience. This story reports that Netflix is going to double its budget for European based content, both in English and foreign languages. Netflix, of course, has been drastically increasing its content spending over the past few years, so it’s really no surprise that it would increase in Europe as well. Foreign language shows have done surprisingly well in the US and Netflix often partners with local broadcasters when they’re doing international shows. It ends up being a pretty effective spending strategy for Netflix: the company may not have exclusive rights to the shows within the home country, but it does for the rest the world. These international co-productions end up defraying part of the cost of the show but still giving them huge exclusive territories.
