Facebook will let users see more detailed information about how they’re targeted by specific ads, the company said Thursday.
Previously, a “Why am I seeing this ad?” option showed less specific information, such as whether you were part of a targeted demographic or had visited a related website. Now Facebook will show exactly how your data was used, including whether it was collected by a third-party data broker that in turn handed that information to an actual advertiser.
The move is the latest in a series of changes Facebook has made in recent months to be more transparent about its ad policies and the data it collects on users. The company is facing roughly a dozen known government investigations around the world for its data privacy mishaps, including an ongoing probe by the Federal Trade Commission that Facebook has already said could result in a record $5 billion settlement.
