As we reported yesterday, Google’s top search and artificial intelligence executive John Giannandrea recently stepped down from his position because he wanted to be “more hands-on with technology,” according to a person close to Google. But today, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced in an internal email that Mr. Giannandrea would be joining Apple to lead its AI strategy. This raises the question of whether Apple poached Mr. Giannandrea or whether he decided to leave after being pushed out of his role in Google’s recent management shuffle. News of Mr. Giannandrea’s departure appears to have been closely held inside and outside of Alphabet. Several former Alphabet employees we spoke with weren’t aware that Mr. Giannandrea was planning to leave.
