Tencent Gets License to Test Autonomous Cars

China is giving the green light to more self-driving car tests as it tries to catch up with Silicon Valley in the global race—even as the U.S. industry is watching the investigation into Uber’s deadly self-driving car accident in March.

Chinese internet giant Tencent has obtained a license to test autonomous cars on some public roads in the southern city of Shenzhen where the company is based. Another internet giant Baidu already has a license to test its self-driving cars in Beijing, while Shanghai has also granted similar licenses to other competitors.

Last month, the Chinese government issued national guidelines for internet-connected cars, paving the way for local governments to allow more self-driving tests.
