Open-Source Software Vets Launch New VC Firm

OSS Capital, a VC firm launched today that focuses exclusively on commercial open-source software, is looking to capitalize on the growing attention this segment is getting in the wake of Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub and Salesforce’s $6.5 billion purchase of MuleSoft earlier this year.

Instead of providing tons of funding, OSS Capital will offer open-source startups a combination of seed-stage investment and ongoing guidance from its team of five open-source software industry veterans, says Joseph Jacks, OSS Capital’s founder and general partner. In its first investment, OSS Capital led a $950,000 round of funding for Dev.to, an online community for open-source developers.

Essentially, OSS Capital is betting that its knowledge and experience around open-source software will yield a bigger competitive advantage for startups than writing huge checks.
