How U.S. Chipmakers Got Trump to Ease Huawei Ban

Lobbyists from Intel, Broadcom, and Qualcomm were able to get the Trump administration to loosen its ban on selling chips to Huawei Technologies by arguing that it could harm their business reputations in a way that could compromise national security, Bloomberg reported. This is an example of how U.S. chip giants are teaming up to deal with being caught in the crossfire of President Trump’s trade war with China, their largest market.

This also shows how President Trump is trying to use Huawei as a bargaining chip to extract concessions from Chinese authorities without creating long-term problems for U.S. tech companies. His decision to ease the Huawei ban reflects how difficult a balancing act Trump was trying to pull off.
