Tesla Pulls Full Self-Driving Option

Tesla has quietly removed an option for “full self-driving” capability from its new online order page. CEO Elon Musk said the feature, which isn’t currently available but Tesla had been selling to customers as a future add-on, was “causing too much confusion.”

The Information reported on the consequences of Tesla’s mixed messaging on hands-free driving earlier this month.  Tesla warns drivers never to take their hands off the wheel, but we found in a recent test drive of a Model 3 that the car allows drivers to remain on Autopilot for more than 30 seconds at a time without their hands on the wheel.

While Tesla no longer promotes “full self-driving” on its order page, the company still pushes the notion elsewhere on its website. That includes a video showing a person sitting in the driver’s seat of a Tesla without his hands on the wheel as a car traverses narrow city streets. The video was still up Monday morning.
