Microsoft is promoting a bill in Washington state that would require developers of facial recognition software to submit products for third-party testing to ensure their accuracy, according to this report from Bloomberg. This shows how Microsoft is putting pressure on Amazon’s cloud unit, Amazon Web Services, which has been reportedly been aggressively pitching its facial recognition software to law enforcement agencies. AWS is reportedly pushing for changes to the proposed law as a condition of supporting it.
Microsoft and Google are both holding off on selling facial recognition broadly until its accuracy can be proven. If Amazon balks at supporting the Washington state law, its rivals could claim even more of the ethical high ground on facial recognition.
