Hyperloop Project Names Rail Expert CEO

Hyperloop, the speedy-transportation-in-a-tube concept promoted by Elon Musk, just got a credibility boost: Jay Walder, a veteran public transit executive, will become CEO of Virgin One Hyperloop. The hiring of Walder, who headed both New York’s and Hong Kong’s transit systems before taking the helm of bike-share operator Motivate, seems designed to alleviate fears that the company will start laying down hyperloop systems in an Uber-style incursion, without regard to existing infrastructure. It also sends a message to hyperloop doubters that the technology has buy-in from someone with deep roots in functioning transportation systems. It’s unlikely, though, that it will be enough to win over many skeptics who don’t expect to see near-supersonic pod travel this century.
