Singapore on Track to Implement Law to Fight False News Reports

In what some critics have labeled the most “far-reaching legislation of its kind,” Singapore’s government is on track to implement tough laws to combat the spread of false news reports and misinformation, according to Bloomberg.

Singapore joins a growing roster of governments trying to prevent the spread of online falsehoods, an especially fraught issue in South and Southeast Asia where online rumors have been used to target certain ethnic groups and in political campaigns.

Singapore’s law, likely to go into effect in the second half of the year, would hold online platforms, such as Facebook, accountable for what’s published, and would grant the government power to force platforms to remove content deemed false.
