Facebook has some good news for publishers and it isn’t even an April Fools joke. Mark Zuckerberg is considering a new section devoted to “high quality news,” that the company would pay for, he told Axel Springer CEO Mathias Dopfner, according to this Recode article.
While publishers would no doubt welcome such a move, some skepticism is justified. Facebook has partnered with publishers on shared ad revenue in the past, only to change its algorithm later and cause many of them to lose traffic. Still, it could arguably be more lucrative than what Apple is offering with its new news app, which takes 50% of the revenue it brings in.
