Microsoft May Remove Cortana Digital Assistant From Windows

Microsoft is now offering its Cortana digital assistant as an application on its Windows app store, in the latest sign that it may be planning to remove Cortana from the Windows operating system, according to this report from The Verge.

The move raises questions about Microsoft’s long-term strategy for Cortana, which once looked poised to be the centerpiece of the software giant’s voice efforts. But the strategy has shifted a number of times in the past year or so.

Meanwhile, the jury is still out on whether Microsoft’s much-hyped digital assistant partnership with Amazon, in which the companies are integrating Cortana and Alexa, will ever evolve into something with meaningful business value.
