Tencent, Netease Still Can’t Get Games Approved in China

China’s videogame giants, Tencent and Netease, are still struggling to release new games despite the resumption of regulatory approvals for games in December, according to Chinese government notices. The country’s media regulator halted game approvals for nine months last year pending a reorganization of the agency, with investors wiping billions of dollars off the market capitalization of both companies. Although China resumed approvals in December, regulators continue to leave games from Tencent and Netease off the list of approved titles. Analysts say it’s only a matter of time before both companies start getting approvals, but if the delays continue for too long, expect to see another hit to their earnings next quarter.
