Popular Chinese Video App Banned From Running Ads

Bytedance, the Beijing-based maker of popular news and video apps that has run afoul of Chinese government censors before, has been dinged again.

Chinese regulators have banned ads from its popular app called Douyin, which has had explosive growth with short videos created by users featuring lip-synching and eye-catching memes. The ad ban comes after the app ran a promotion that authorities felt made light of a venerated Chinese war hero.

Bytedance’s huge growth has posed a challenge to China’s tech incumbents including Tencent and Baidu, as its apps up suck up more user time and advertiser dollars.
