Canada’s arrest of Chinese telecom giant Huawei’s CFO has spooked U.S. tech companies enough that at least one has issued a travel warning for visiting China. Cisco Systems warned some employees not to travel to China but later said it had done so in error, the Nikkei Asian Review reported, citing an internal memo.
The memo, which said it was implementing a restriction of all nonessential travel by U.S.-based Cisco employees, was emailed after Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was detained by Canadian authorities under a U.S. extradition request, Nikkei said.
The arrest will likely send a chill among other U.S. tech executives who might be worried about reprisals. They could respond by curtailing visits and business deals in China until the incident is resolved.
