Tesla CEO Elon Musk put into words what has been happening at Tesla, where he recently took personal control over sales and vehicle production. Musk sent a two-paragraph email to his employees this morning, first reported by Jalopnik, saying the company has been “undertaking a thorough reorganization of our company,” including “flattening the management structure to improve communication, combining functions where sensible and trimming activities that are not vital to the success of our mission.” He didn’t provide details. (One possible reason for that is that all of Musk’s companywide emails leak to the press within a matter of seconds.)
The “flattening” of Tesla has been under way for a while: Its former head of sales left for Lyft earlier this year; the exec who dealt with safety regulators just decamped to Alphabet’s Waymo; and the engineer Musk just bumped from oversight of Model 3 vehicle production, Doug Field, is taking a leave of absence. We look forward to hearing of more changes as Tesla tries to figure out a way to produce vehicles at a faster clip.
