Tim Armstrong, the head of Verizon’s Oath media and advertising business, is in talks to depart, according to The Wall Street Journal. Mr. Armstrong’s pending departure isn’t a huge shock given that Verizon’s new CEO Hans Vestberg, who just took over in August, has said he is more interested in devoting resources to building out 5G than content.
As The Information first reported in July, Mr. Armstrong had explored spinning out Oath from Verizon after struggles with building the business he wanted to build, such as accessing Verizon’s data to help advertisers better target users.
The question now is what happens to Oath. Mr. Vestberg has said Oath isn’t for sale. But with Mr. Armstrong gone and an unclear strategy or vision for the business, it isn’t evident what will happen to the company.
