In Petition, Microsoft Employees Urge CEO Nadella to End ICE Contract

Microsoft employees yesterday gave CEO Satya Nadella a petition signed by more than 300,000 people urging him to end the software company’s contract with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, according to this report from The New York Times. The unrest echoes similar situations at Salesforce, where employees have asked CEO Marc Benioff to stop doing business with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection; and at Google where employees have protested the company’s work with the Pentagon on the drone initiative Project Maven.

In Microsoft’s case, it is clear that some employees aren’t buying Mr. Nadella’s explanation, delivered in an all-hands email last month, that ICE isn’t using Microsoft facial recognition technology or any other software in separating immigrant families from their children at the southern border. The controversy could hamper Microsoft’s efforts to present itself as a forward-thinking company that is focused on the ethical implications of AI.
