AWS Dangles Free Credits to Lure Open Source Developers

Amazon Web Services is taking steps to improve its relations with open source software developers, offering them free service credits and sponsoring a popular programming language.

The moves suggest that AWS is working to counter perceptions that it isn’t as friendly to open source developers as rivals like Microsoft and Google.

Some of AWS’s largest customers, including Netflix, Capital One and Intuit, are heavy users of open source software and have pushed the cloud unit to contribute more to projects. While it appears that AWS is listening, Google has gone further by vowing not to offer services that compete with commercial open source companies that sell software through its platform.
