Right now, Facebook Workplace isn’t a direct competitor to Slack, but it probably will be, Facebook co-founder and Asana CEO Dustin Moskovitz told The Information’s second annual subscriber conference.
“We think the key difference between a Facebook group or a Yammer group and something like Slack is that Slack is a synchronous, unthreaded chat room and Facebook is asynchronous and threaded. Those are powerful distinctions,” Mr. Moskovitz said. “If you want to say something like, ‘Hey, I’m having the kids on Saturday, who wants to come?’ you don’t want that interweaved with the 20 other conversations you want to have with that group [on Slack]. But sometimes synchronous is exactly what you need when you need to say, ‘Hey, let’s get together and hash this out right now.’ That’s when Slack does well.”
